The City has bestowed former Mayor Dennis Wellington with the title Honorary Freeman of the City of Albany, recognising his service, leadership and enduring contribution to the Albany community.
The title of Honorary Freeman is the highest honour to be conferred by the City of Albany and is awarded in rare and exceptional circumstances to individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the community.
Mr Wellington served on Albany Council for 23 years, including four years as Deputy Mayor before being elected Mayor in 2011, a position he held until 2023.
Mr Wellington is a passionate advocate for Albany and the Great Southern region, having built strong relationships with neighbouring councils, championing local businesses and advocating for improved services and opportunities for regional communities.
Mayor of Albany Greg Stocks said Mr Wellington’s contribution to Albany had left a lasting legacy across the community.
“Dennis Wellington dedicated more than two decades of service to Albany with unwavering passion, integrity and commitment,” Mayor Stocks said.
“From leading the community through significant milestones and challenges, to advocating strongly for education, tourism, economic development and regional recognition, Dennis has made an extraordinary contribution to the future of Albany and the Great Southern.
“The Honorary Freeman title is reserved for individuals who have made an exceptional impact on our community, and Dennis Wellington is a truly deserving recipient of this prestigious honour.”
Mr Wellington played a significant leadership role in the Anzac Commemorative Events held in Albany between 2014 and 2018 and was instrumental in shaping Council’s vision for Albany 2026.
His advocacy also contributed to the expansion of the University of Western Australia campus in Albany and the development of student accommodation in the region.
Recognising the intrinsic link between sport and positive wellbeing, Mr Wellington advocated strongly for Centennial Park Sporting Precinct which serves as the home of sport in the Great Southern today.
Mr Wellington played an active role during the May 2018 Albany fires, spending time at the incident control centre and on the fire grounds and guided the community through the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mr Wellington joins Mrs Alice Rule and Mr Terry Eaton as Honorary Freeman of the City of Albany who are recognised as a civic dignitary, invited to civic functions and commemorated within the City’s Council Chambers.
