The City of Albany has welcomed funding support from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs to deliver Stage 3 of the Hidden Stories of the Fortress project at the Princess Royal Fortress Military Museum.
A $54,870 grant has been awarded through the Australian Government’s Saluting Their Service program, which helps preserve and promote awareness of Australia’s wartime heritage and the experiences of those who have served.
Stage 3 will see a refresh of key historic structures at the Fortress including the Guard House, Sentry Box, Underground Magazine, and A2 Gun Shelter.
New interpretive storyboards will be installed across the site to align with those developed during the Barracks refresh in Stage 1 (2019/2020) and Stage 2 (2022/2023), ensuring a consistent visitor experience and enhanced storytelling throughout the precinct.
Deputy Mayor Paul Terry said the project’s timing added significance to the work.
“It’s fitting that the final stage of this project will be completed in 2026, a year where we reflect on our past, celebrate our community today, and create a future where anything is possible,” he said.
“The Princess Royal Fortress is one of only two pre-Federation fortresses built to protect Australia’s intercontinental trade routes, and it played a critical role in the ANZAC convoys departing from King George Sound.
“Without the protection it offered, those convoys would never have gathered here in such numbers. It’s a place of deep national significance and one we’re proud to continue preserving for future generations.”
The works are due for completion in late 2026.
