At-risk young Aboriginal people are being offered the chance to dive into their education, learning and career pathways with a place in the Great Southern Youth Scuba Training Program. The City of Albany have partnered with WA Police, Clontarf Foundation, PCYC Follow the Dream, Rio Tinto and South Coast Diving Supplies to bring this program to the Great Southern in 2020.Initially delivered in the Pilbara, the Youth Scuba Training Program uses ocean diving to engage at-risk Aboriginal youths to utilise the tourism industry as a career pathway. The program will run as an after school activity taking place at Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre with ocean sessions provided by South Coast Diving Supplies.Applicants must be aged between 15 and 17, have a current school attendance of 80% or higher and have a keen interest in the great outdoors to be eligible for a position within the program.City of Albany Acting Manager Community Development and Engagement Rani Param said the Youth Scuba Training Program was investing in the positive futures of our community’s young Aboriginal people.“This program will support disadvantaged youth from across the Noongar communities in Albany and allow them to take an opportunity that will develop their leaderships skills, improve engagement in education and increase gainful employment pathways, so we’re very pleased to be able to support it” she said.First Class Constable and Youth Policing Officer Andy Goddard founded the program and said it promoted healthy bodies, minds and spirit through the marine environment.“Diving uses common language to communicate, is a non-contact and non-aggressive activity that creates the foundation for high-level thinking and learning,” he said.“We are developing our young people into leaders by providing a program for growth to those who need it most across the Great Southern.”The program will commence at Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre once COVID-19 restrictions allow the pool to reopen in an appropriate capacity to effectively facilitate the program.
