Albany’s maritime heritage and vibrant arts scene takes centre stage this July as the Maritime Festival returns with an exciting month-long program of events, exhibitions and family-friendly activities.

Running throughout July, the festival invites residents and visitors to dive into Albany’s seafaring stories through a diverse program that spans food, arts, culture, history and hands-on experiences.

Returning to this year’s festival is the Maritime Menu Map, featuring 19 local bars, cafés and restaurants serving up specially crafted maritime-themed dishes and beverages.

Families can embark on the popular Treasure Trail, collecting stickers from participating local businesses to fill their festival passports and claim a prize from Albany Town Hall.

The school holidays will be packed with activities for children, including Maritime Movies at Albany Town Hall on 7 and 8 July, with screenings at 10.30am and 2pm each day.

For those keen to delve deeper into Albany’s connection to the sea, Maritime Exploration Evenings at Six Degrees will feature engaging talks exploring the region’s maritime history and culture.

The arts feature prominently in the program, with Pirates of Penzance taking to the stage at Albany Town Hall on 17 and 18 July in a sparkling new production from Albany’s newest theatre company.

The Albany International Folk ‘N’ Shanty Festival will bring Albany’s maritime culture to life with an Irish flare, from folk sessions and concerts to pub shanty singing and a tales of pirates.

The Museum of the Great Southern will present exhibitions, children’s art workshops and interactive storytelling sessions, while Albany’s Historic Whaling Station will offer treasure hunts, drawing masterclasses, creative workshops and maritime-inspired musical performances.

Additional activities include pool parties and kids’ gym sessions at the Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre, writing workshops, film screenings and author talks at Albany Public Library, and Art After Dark, Storytime of the Sea and Above the Sea creative activities at Vancouver Arts Centre.

Manager Community Relations Elise van Gorp said the Maritime Festival had become one of Albany’s most anticipated annual events.

“The Maritime Festival celebrates the stories, landscapes and experiences that have shaped Albany as a coastal community,” she said.

“Activities for all ages, from arts and culture to food, history and family fun provides countless opportunities to connect with our maritime identity and enjoy everything our region has to offer.”
