Ring road a game changer for Albany

Ring road a game changer for AlbanyAlbany Mayor Dennis Wellington said the Prime Minister’s pledge of $140 million for the final stages of the Albany Ring Road would be a game changer for Albany and transport in the region.

“This is a major win for Albany,” Mayor Wellington said.

“We’ve been lobbying for this project for a long time as it will transform the transport link through Albany, making our roads safer as well as improving efficiency of delivery to the port.”

The money, announced today, adds to the $35 million election commitment from the McGowan Government in 2017, providing enough funding for the $172 million project to proceed.

“Menang Drive was the first stage of the project and that was finished in 12 years ago, so we’ve been lobbying hard to get support to finish the ring road all the way to the port and we’re really pleased that can now happen,” Mayor Wellington said.

“It will just be a great exercise for the region, taking trucks away from our suburban areas, especially the big roundabout, and provide unimpeded access to the port which is a major economic driver for our region.”

Stage two of the ring road will run from George Street through to Princess Royal Drive, and stage three from Albany Highway to Lower Denmark Road via Link Road and George Street.

Mayor Dennis Wellington thanks Member for O’Connor Rick Wilson for advocating for the project in Canberra and securing the funding needed to finish the road.

“Mr Wilson has been very supportive of this project and we appreciate his efforts to get his government’s commitment to progress the ring road,” he said.
