The City of Albany is proud to present Echoes & Voices, a new exhibition at Albany Town Hall that brings together more than 200 years of artistic interpretations of Kinjarling / Albany.
Tracing artistic responses to Kinjarling / Albany from early colonial works dating back to 1798 through to contemporary artists working in the region today, the exhibition reveals how perceptions of the landscape have evolved across generations.
The exhibition features works loaned from the Janet Holmes à Court Collection, the Shire of Plantagenet and private local collections.
Echoes & Voices showcases paintings, prints and contemporary artworks that capture the beauty, power and significance of the Great Southern landscape.
The exhibition highlights a gradual shift in how artists have engaged with the landscape with early colonial artworks documenting an unfamiliar territory through observation and mapping, while later works explored deeper connections to place, memory and identity.
As the exhibition unfolds, Kinjarling / Albany emerges not simply as a geographical location, but as a landscape that inspires reflection, creativity and belonging.
City of Albany Visual Arts Officer Indra Geidans said the exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to see how local landscapes have continued to inspire artists across centuries.
“Echoes & Voices brings together an extraordinary collection of works that demonstrate the enduring influence of Kinjarling / Albany on artistic practice,” she said.
“Visitors can trace the changing ways artists have seen and responded to this place over time, from early observations of the landscape through to deeply personal and contemporary interpretations.
“It is a powerful reflection on the relationship between people, place and artistic expression.”
The exhibition also acknowledges the profound cultural significance of Kinjarling / Albany to Menang Noongar people, recognising Country as a living cultural entity shaped by ancestral knowledge, stories and enduring connection.
Community members are invited to attend a curator’s talk at Albany Town Hall on Saturday, October 10 at 10.30am, offering further insight into the themes and works featured in the exhibition.
