From August 5 the City of Albany, Shire of Denmark and Shire of Plantagenet are coming together to deliver a unique and innovative suite of programs aimed at getting the over 60’s community that are currently inactive, active.
The program titled Long Live You will be running until July 2020 with four quarterly programs per year that follow the seasons (Winter, Spring, Summer & Autumn). The Long Live You Winter program 2019 will be free for those residents who wish to be a part of the introductory program.
The sessions will be fun, social, low impact, designed for beginners and will include unlimited access for members to come to the Long Live You classes as many times as they like throughout the free Winter program.
Manager Recreation Services Samantha Stevens says that currently only 25 percent of Australians over 65 meet the necessary physical guidelines set out by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare; a figure we need to increase across the country, particularly in the Great Southern of WA.
“We know Aussies are living for longer than ever before and it’s important that programs such as Long Live You are implemented to help our residents who are over 60 to sustain a physical and active lifestyle where they can reap the benefits of physical and mental wellbeing, and be connected to their community” she says.
The Long Live You program will provide practical and stimulating physical activity that focusses on muscle strength, increased mobility and balance that leads to increased independence and confidence. A key emphasis will also be on education surrounding nutrition, mental health and wellbeing that give our over 60’s community the motivation to get out and get active.
A Long Live You Open Day will be held on Friday August 2 from 10am – 3pm at Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre where entry is free and morning tea is provided.
