Honouring the life and legacy of Dennis Wellington

The City of Albany is deeply saddened by the passing of former Mayor and Honorary Freeman of the City Dennis Wellington.

Mr Wellington dedicated more than two decades to serving the Albany community, including 23 years as an Elected Member and 12 years as Mayor, making him Albany's longest-serving Mayor and one of the Great Southern's most respected leaders.

In May 2026, Mr Wellington was bestowed the honour of Honorary Freeman of the City in recognition of his outstanding service, leadership and enduring contribution to the Albany community.

Mr Wellington was a tireless advocate for Albany and the Great Southern, with his leadership helping to drive significant projects including the Anzac Centenary Commemorations, Field of Light: Avenue of Honour, Centennial Park Redevelopment, Middleton Beach Coastal Protection, Albany Town Hall Redevelopment, Albany Ring Road, Aboriginal Dual Naming and the Albany 2026 project.

His commitment to the community was equally evident during times of challenge, including the 2018 Albany bushfires and the COVID-19 pandemic, while his advocacy extended across regional road safety, education, tourism, sustainability and support for local businesses.

Mayor of Albany Greg Stocks said Mr Wellington’s passing would be felt deeply across the community and throughout the government sector.

“It is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the passing of former Mayor Dennis Wellington today,” Mayor Stocks said.

“While we are still coming to terms with this loss, it is fitting that we recognise the tremendous contribution Dennis made to our community over many decades.

“Dennis dedicated his life to making Albany a better place. From advocating for improved local services and opportunities for our region to supporting community organisations and local businesses, he approached every task with energy, determination and genuine care for people.

“Whether he was representing Albany on the national stage or stopping for a chat during his morning bike ride, Dennis was someone who connected with people and made them feel valued.”

Mr Wellington will be remembered not only for his remarkable record of public service, but also for the warmth, humility and community spirit that made him such a well-loved figure throughout Albany and the Great Southern.

The City extends its sincere condolences to Dennis’ family, friends and all those whose lives he touched.
