The City of Albany is inviting community to experience the work of one of Western Australia’s most celebrated artists when Howard Taylor: Material practice opens at the Albany Town Hall this month.
Running from 15 May to 20 June, the exhibition showcases works from the State Art Collection, The Art Gallery of WA (AGWA), offering visitors an insight into the legacy of acclaimed painter and sculptor Howard Taylor.
Recognised as one of WA’s most significant artists, Taylor (1918–2001) became renowned for his evocative landscape paintings and sculptural works, which explored the relationship between light, form and the natural environment.
His innovative approach to materials and deep connection to the Australian landscape earned him widespread recognition throughout his career, including being named a WA Living Treasure in 1999 and WA Citizen of the Year in 2000.
Among the featured works is Double self-portrait (1959), an oil on composition board painting held within The State Art Collection.
City of Albany Visual Arts Officer Indra Geidans said the exhibition presents an exciting opportunity for local audiences to engage with an artist whose work has had a lasting impact on Australian art.
“Howard Taylor’s work continues to resonate with audiences because of its thoughtful exploration of landscape, light and materiality,” she said.
“This exhibition provides Albany residents and visitors with the chance to experience significant works from AGWA here in the Great Southern and gain a deeper appreciation for one of Western Australia’s most influential artists.”
The exhibition is supported by the WA Government through the Regional Exhibition Touring Boost initiative, helping bring important cultural experiences to regional communities across the State.
Visitors are also encouraged to attend a free curator talk with Emma Bitmead on Friday 22 May at 3.30pm, where attendees can learn more about Taylor’s artistic practice and the themes explored throughout the exhibition.
Howard Taylor: Material practice will be on display at Albany Town Hall, 217 York Street, Albany, from Tuesday to Saturday between 10am and 5pm.
