City of Albany recognised for commitment to road safety
The City of Albany has been recognised for its ongoing commitment to improving road safety, receiving a RoadWise Recognised Award at the 2026 WA Local Government Awards.
The Awards celebrate the efforts of Local Governments in adopting best practice approaches to managing local road safety performance and delivering safer outcomes for their communities.
The program encourages councils to take a holistic approach to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on local roads through strategic planning, infrastructure improvements and community education.
It also supports benchmarking, knowledge sharing and continual improvement across the local government sector.
The City of Albany was recognised for a range of initiatives delivered over the past year that contribute to safer roads and pathways for residents and visitors.
Highlights included the development of the City of Albany Bike Plan, implementation of fleet telematics technology, path construction and maintenance programs, road and surrounding infrastructure improvements, strategic planning initiatives with road network implications and ongoing road safety communications and promotions.
Chief Executive Officer Andrew Sharpe said the award reflected the City’s commitment to creating a safer and more connected community.
“This recognition highlights the work being undertaken across the organisation to improve safety outcomes for everyone who uses our local road network,” he said.
“Whether it is investing in infrastructure, planning for future growth, improving operational processes or encouraging safer behaviours through education and awareness campaigns, the City is committed to making road safety a priority.
“This award acknowledges the dedication of our staff and partners who work every day to deliver projects and initiatives that contribute to safer roads, pathways and public spaces throughout our community.
“The City will continue to build on this work and seek innovative ways to improve safety, accessibility and connectivity across Albany.”
The RoadWise Recognised initiative provides important insights into the contribution local governments make towards Western Australia’s road safety objectives and helps identify opportunities to strengthen road safety outcomes for communities across the State.
