Generous donation provides accessibility boost for Albany

A generous donation from hazardous waste company Transport Services has helped restore important equipment for people with disability at the Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre (ALAC), following the vandalism of the City of Albany’s Changing Place facility.

Earlier this year, the City’s Changing Place was significantly damaged in an act of vandalism, impacting access to essential facilities for people with high support needs and their carers.

After seeing media coverage of the incident, Transport Services contacted the City of Albany to offer support, donating an adult change table and ceiling hoist free of charge.

The donated change table has been installed in ALAC’s Accessible Changing Room, marking an important step in improving accessibility. Installation of the donated hoist is expected in the coming weeks, further enhancing access to safe and dignified facilities for residents and visitors.

City of Albany Chief Executive Officer Andrew Sharpe said the donation was a remarkable example of community-minded generosity.

"The vandalism of our Changing Place facility was deeply disappointing, particularly given the importance of these services to people living with disability and their families," Mr Sharpe said.

"We are incredibly grateful to Transport Services for stepping forward and offering this equipment at no cost. Their generosity has enabled us to quickly restore essential accessibility infrastructure and ensure our community continues to have access to these important facilities."

Transport Services owners Hannah Chalmers and Ryan Banting said the company was pleased to support the Albany community.

"When we learned about the damage to the Changing Place facility, we knew we wanted to help. Access to appropriate changing facilities is something many people depend on every day, and we understand the significant impact when that access is lost," they said.

"We are proud to donate this equipment and support the City of Albany's commitment to creating inclusive and accessible spaces for everyone."

The City of Albany remains committed to improving accessibility and inclusion across its facilities and services and thanked Transport Services for its generosity and support.

The donation highlights the positive impact that partnerships between local government, community organisations and industry can have in creating accessible and welcoming environments for all members of the community.
