Lowering costs, weight and damage to race vehicles is the driving force behind a trial by the Great Southern Street Machine Association Inc. to use recycled plastic bales as race arresters.

The City of Albany has supported the innovative project with a Community Waste and Sustainability Grant, partnering with Cleanaway who are providing the bales of plastic from Great Southern households.

The initiative will see 1,200kg of mixed plastics such as sauce bottles, ice-cream containers and shampoo bottles repurposed per TAB arrester, with each arrester undergoing an approvals process with the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) prior to being used for events.

City of Albany Chief Executive Officer Andrew Sharpe said the City was pleased to support this creative project.
“We are becoming increasingly aware of the overabundance of plastic waste around the world. This project is a fantastic example of repurposing and could become a model for recycling nationally or even internationally,” Mr Sharpe said.
Cleanaway Regional Manager Damien Moss said they were also proud to be involved.

“Cleanaway is very pleased to assist the Great Southern Street Machine Association by donating 150 bales of mixed plastic containers for use in the very unique initiative to repurpose plastic bottles and containers into safety barriers for use in local motor sport events.” Mr Moss said.

Great Southern Street Machine Association engineer Thomas Benson thanked the City of Albany and Cleanaway for their support to create environmentally sustainable arresters.

“This has been an endeavour to produce infrastructure for a number of groups to use in the community, and we’re pleased to be reusing a recyclable product locally for the benefit of Albany,” Mr Benson said.
