Signal to transform Mount Melville Tower

The City of Albany has announced Signal, a public art installation for the Mount Melville Communications Tower that is currently in development as part of Albany 2026.

Supported by the City of Albany as part of the Albany 2026 program, Signal reimagines the Mount Melville Communications Tower, a structure built for transmission and turns it toward listening.

For decades, the tower has been used to send signals outward. Through Signal, it becomes a symbol of listening, encouraging reflection on place, community and the shared histories of Kinjarling Albany.

Created by Albany-based artist Glenn Hegedus of Archetype Projects, Signal has been shaped through community consultation and cultural engagement through conversations with people who have diverse connections to the region.

Mayor of Albany Greg Stocks said the project was a unique opportunity to connect art, place and community.

"The Mount Melville Communications Tower is an iconic part of Albany’s landscape, and Signal is an exciting opportunity to transform a familiar piece of infrastructure into something that reflects our community and our place,” he said.

"Albany 2026 is about reflecting on what makes our city unique, while creating opportunities for local people to contribute to this significant year.

"Allowing local creative talent to reimagine such a prominent Albany landmark brings together art, place and community in a way that creates connection and a strong sense of local pride."

Artist Glenn Hegedus said the project had been developed through listening, consultation and thoughtful interpretation.

"Signal has grown through conversations with people who hold different connections to this place, including Menang Elders and artists, community members, cultural practitioners and local organisations,” he said.

“Rather than seeking consensus, the process has focused on listening to diverse perspectives and reflecting the emotions, complexities and histories that shape Kinjarling / Albany.”

Signal is supported by the City of Albany as part of Albany 2026, supported by Creative Albany, and shaped by the community members who have generously contributed their time, perspectives and trust throughout the consultation process.
