Albany Public Library will welcome award-winning author and former ABC journalist and broadcaster Gillian O’Shaughnessy for two special literary events on Thursday, September 10. Celebrating flash fiction and the release of her publication, Salt City Runaway, O’Shaughnessy will lead a Flash Fiction Masterclass for writers of all experience levels from 10am to 12pm. The fun and practical workshop will explore how specific details, careful observation and personal experiences can be transformed into vivid and emotionally resonant fiction.

Albany’s Stirling Terrace will trade traffic for live music, street entertainment and alfresco dining when The Spring Social transforms the precinct across two vibrant evenings this September long weekend. Presented by the City of Albany as part of the Albany 2026 program, the free event will take place from 5pm to 9pm on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September, between York and Spencer Street.

Albany’s landscapes will be viewed across billions of years of history in Numen, an immersive art-science experience opening at Albany Town Hall as part of the Albany 2026 program. Created by Albany-based media artist Peter Morse, with an original musical score by Western Australian composers Glenn Rogers and Steve Richter, Numen is a multimedia song cycle exploring the origins, climate and landscapes of Albany and the Great Southern. The work combines computer visualisations of climate and geophysical simulations, satellite data and data-driven animation to journey across extraordinary scales of time and space. Presented across three large screens, six audiovisual compositions journey from the formation of the solar system and early life through Deep Time evolution of landscape and into imagined futures.

Albany Town Hall’s latest exhibition, Rich and Rare, invites audiences to explore the history, near disappearance and restoration of Australia’s native flat oyster reefs. Through photography, video installation and machine-embroidered lace, artist Jacqui Malins examines the story of Ostrea angasi, the native flat oyster once found in reefs along Australia’s southern coastline. The species has a particularly strong connection to Kinjarling/Albany, with the once-abundant oyster reefs intrinsic to the history and identity of Oyster Harbour.
